Betsy DeVos is currently the Secretary of Education for the United States of America. She was brought in as one of the top choices by President Trump in order to spearhead the Department of Education. Her nomination was a controversial one due to a number of different factors. Betsy DeVos came to Washington D.C. without a real political background nor a background working in the school system. Why did she get the job? Betsy DeVos has spent her entire life working in order to make conservative school reform a reality and now she is being accorded the opportunity in order to do so.
Betsy DeVos grew up in a small neighborhood in Michigan. She was raised to embody the ideals of the reformer. Her father ran a prominent and successful business while her brother became one of the most famous and successful overseas defense contractors on the planet. To say that Betsy DeVos had a lot to live up to would be putting it mildly. Still, Betsy DeVos knew that her job as a reformer would take center stage no matter what it was that she chose to pursue. She ended up choosing to pursue education reform.
Education reform from the school choice perspective, which is a concept that DeVos has helped to pioneer, is particularly unique. Once considered a fringe concept not worthy of mainstream attention, school choice has become increasingly popular in recent years. DeVos learned of school choice from the work of Milton Friedman, and she has helped to adapt it to today’s modern climate. The core goal of the concept is to push tax dollars to facilities that can help unique children with their learning opportunities. The domino effect of this decision, according to DeVos, would be huge. By having tax dollars support privately owned facilities, the public school system would have a lesser burden. As parents are introduced to new educational opportunities for their children, there would be more successfully educated kids as a result.
Despite how clear the benefits of school choice are, Betsy DeVos knows that she’ll have to put up one heck of a fight in order to bring them to reality. DeVos came to Washington D.C. at potentially one of the most divisive points in recent political history. As a Donald Trump appointee, Betsy DeVos will be under increased scrutiny throughout her time in office. There is a very real possibility that her work will be completely stymied as a result of reflexive obstruction to the Trump Administration. Still, DeVos is pushing forward with her work, and she is flying all around the country touting the benefits of the school choice system. We’ll see in a few years if Betsy DeVos was able to find success.
