Patty Rocklage and her husband are living proof that you do not have to be incredibly wealthy to contribute to the advancement of research and the improvement of humanity as a whole. A well-known psychologist and therapist, Patty Rocklage decided last year to join her husband in making one of the biggest donations that MIT received from private donors in the past year. According to statements made by the couple, the gift was meant to be a sign of gratitude by the family to the University of giving them the foundation that they have since used to build their lives and also to advance their careers.
Scott Rocklage, the husband to Patty Rocklage, is a former student of MIT and he studied there for his doctorate under the capable hands of Professor Richard Schrock, a former Nobel laureate, in the university’s Department of Chemistry. As a gift to the institution for giving him his first break in life, Dr. Rocklage and is wife Patty Rocklage decided to donate some funds. The funds were used in the renovation of Lester Wolfe Professor of Chemistry, Moungi Bawendi nanotechnology and nanochemistry lab. The lab was not in the shape that it once used to be before Professor Bawendi donated with support from two of his graduate student.
In mid last month, the couple toured the institution to inspect the renovations made to the science facility through their donations and were showered with tons of praises from members of the university’s faculty for their generous donation. A plaque bearing the names of the two scientists was also unveiled, and the plaque will be mounted at the facility’s entrance as a further tribute to their contribution. Patty Rocklage has been practicing psychiatry for more than 20 years during which time she has interacted with and given therapy to thousands of patients drawn from different corners of the country. Despite her relatively advancing age, Patty continues with her practice as a therapist although, in her words, she might have to slow down and probably quit soon altogether to make time for her family and other things that she loves.
